Property owners to serve on CLV committees. The Board is pleading for owners to step up and get their feet wet by serving on a Committee. A special request this month is for additional volunteers to serve on the Rules & Regulations Committee. Susan Loucka, the Chairperson, says this committee is one that values "common sense" ideas in regards to Village issues. What a fantastic means to obtain a free education as to how your association governs the use of property in the Village.

BACK GATE
Owners may now use your gate cards at the rear gate. Please contact the Christmas Lake office if you encounter any problems.

Chipping Completed

It's fall and the Maintenance staff has officially closed "chipping" season at Christmas Lake Village for the property owners' brush in 2011.
Dan Lautner, the Head of CLV Maintenance, reported that the only "glitch" in his plans was that his crew preferred the piles to be shorter and spread out over a longer stretch of the owner's road frontage. He preferred longer branches as opposed to shorter. Always leave an 8' long branch in lieu of cutting the branch in half. Amazingly, they can chip branches up to 6" in diameter.
"The chipping service is a process, meaning that the crew, with the chipping machine in tow, travels the streets of Christmas Lake Village in search of neatly stacked piles of tree branches. This was done over a 2 week time period, and they visited each subdivision twice.

Next year, the service will once again begin in the middle of October.

Message from Board Director Amy Busler

Hello CLV members.

I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve on the board. I wanted to serve on the board for many reasons. The main reason was that I always seemed to be one to sit back and think that one person really didn’t matter. I never went to the board meetings and just thought it was not a big deal.

As time went along, I soon realized I wanted to hear all that was going on. I went to a meeting and was surprised to see more board members than members of the association.

I want to personally invite each of you to a meeting. Sometimes it may be long but other times it can be enjoyable. My wish is for more people to attend because I think more people need to voice their opinions. Not everyone will agree but that is not always a bad thing. We now have a few interesting topics at hand and I welcome you to join us as the decisions are made.

The main one at hand is the possible Kaspar Gate. I hope you take the time to fill out the survey that is at the gatehouse or online on the website. Everyone needs to fill one out so we can have many ideas and thoughts to consider when we vote on this topic.

We, as a board, want you to come and share your thoughts. Everyone in this village counts and will be heard when they come to our monthly meetings. I think at this time we have a great assorted type of people on the board which makes it more even when we vote. I am thankful that I have been able to serve on this board and am grateful for the friendships that I have made from this decision to become involved. We will have three openings for the board this year so please think about what new ideas and thoughts you can give back to our village as you consider running for the board.

Christmas Lake Golf Course

As soon as the snow melts on the course and the sun dries the ground the golfers will be ready to hit the links to begin working on their 2010 handicaps.

The offseason rates still apply during the month of March so it is a terrific time to get out and dust off your game. At $25 for 18 holes with a cart or $15 for 9 holes with a cart it is hard to beat those prices. Take advantage of the lower prices and cooler temperatures to get your game back in the swing of things.

A Backwards Tournament is being planned for March according to club pro Tom Nelson. This is a different format that does basically what the title suggests. Players will start beside the 18 green and play to the 17th green etc. For more information regarding date and time contact the pro shop.

Once Spring arrives the golf season heats up. The Men’s EP League will begin in April on Thursdays at 9 a.m. The Two-Man Scramble Alternate Shot Tourney will be played April 17 & 18. April also heralds the Ladies Golf Association kickoff meeting. Exact dates and times have not been determined.

On April 24 the Multiple Sclerosis Society will have a fundraiser tournament. If interested in participating as either a player or sponsor please contact Tina Nix at 812-649-4060.

Beginning in May, the regular course fees will resume. Below are a few of the tournaments for May:
• May 4 – Ladies League play will start
• May 7 – Lincolnland Economic Development Outing
• May 14 – Tri-State Pro Am
• May 15 – P.A.C. High School Tournament
• May 19 – Ron Smith’s Arthritis Outing
• May 22 – Relay for Life Fundraiser

Holiday World Adds World’s Longest Water Coaster

This year marks the second-largest ride addition in Holiday World’s history following yet another attendance breaking year for the 64 year old park. The Wildebeest, the world’s longest water coaster, will open in Splashin’ Safari in May.

At 1/3 of a mile long and right around 2 ½ minutes long the Wildebeest will give guests an exciting ride. “And when we say it’s long, we really mean it,” says park president Will Koch. “Wildebeest is one-third of a mile long and it will thrill riders for two and a half splashing minutes of hills, drops, twists and turns.”

Even with several rounds of snow, construction is on schedule and park employees “are very pleased with how it’s coming together,” said public relations director Paula Werne. “We got enough of the structure built in the fall so now we are doing mostly indoor work.”

Guests will find the Wildebeest just north of the Bahari wave pool. The Wildebeest boasts a conveyor ride up the coaster’s lifthill, a total of 178 feet in drops, and HydroMagnetic technology, utilizing linear induction motors that will smoothly push rafts up hills. “A couple of water coasters use LIMs,” Werne said. “But most use water to propel the rafts up hills.”

The Wildebeest covers more than two acres, increasing the park’s size to 27 acres. The new coaster’s conveyor style lifthill replaces tower stairs, making it accessible to riders who could have difficulty walking up stairs. At a price tag of $5.5 million, Wildebeest is the second largest expansion project in the park’s history.

After riding the Wildebeest guests will be able to relax and listen to the sounds of Jimmy Buffet, the Beatles, and Beach Boys between the Jungle Racers and Jungle Jake’s. Beachcombers, a four member cover band, will play everyone’s favorite beach music.

Also new for this year Holiday World will be expanding its special diet items throughout the parks eating establishments. Several of the park’s restaurants offer an expanded menu of pre-packaged food items which do not contain eight of the most common food allergens, namely: wheat, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, milk, soy and eggs.

“We started offering special menu items for our guests with food allergies a few years ago,” says Holiday World & Splashin' Safari’s president, Will Koch. “We heard from so many families who were thrilled to spend a day at our park without worrying about food allergies that we decided to add some vegetarian and sugar-free items this year.”

A list of allergen-friendly items is available on the “Restaurants & Food” page at Holiday World’s website, www.HolidayWorld.com/visits/restaurants-food-outlets.

The park hired a record 2100 seasonal employees for the 2010 season. People braved the bad weather and “everything is filled,” said Werne. If people are interested in employment they should apply online to have their application in the database.

Online Survey Deadline March 8

There is still time to complete the online security survey for CLV. This survey was compiled by the Board of Directors to help them making decisions that represent what residents of CLV would like to see accomplished.

“We’ve had a terrific response,” said property manager Mark Kroeger. “But there is still time to complete the survey.”

The survey can be found either online at www.clvillage.com or you can pick up a hard copy at the gatehouse. Please take time to express your opinions so that the board can make decisions based on what CLV resident’s desire.

Insuring the Beach Causes Frustrations

For the past two years insuring the beach area has been a source of frustration for CLV. In 2008 the board voted to discontinue lifeguard service due to the difficulties in maintaining reliable lifeguards. This cut would also save CLV $10,000; the amount budgeted for salaries for lifeguards throughout the summer.

The board had to scramble however when the association’s insurance carrier required them to hire lifeguards for the beach or the coverage would not be in effect. Lifeguards were hired for last year and again attendance was poor.

Each summer the lifeguards are placed in difficult situations, CLV Property Manager Mark Kroeger explains. The lifeguards are usually high school students who get little respect from their peers or older people swimming at the beach Kroeger said.

This year CLV has changed carriers and for a cost of $8,000 will be able to cover the beach (without lifeguards) and the diving boards. This will ultimately save the property owner’s association $2,000 as the budget for lifeguards is $10,000.

The board will again be discussing the beach and diving boards at the March meeting if you wish to express your opinion.

Message from Property Manager Mark Kroeger

Let’s talk about numbers.

There are just under 25 miles of roadway in the Village. We plow both sides of each road making 50 miles. By the time we are done, each side is plowed at least twice, many places 3 times. So that makes as much as 150 miles of plowing at approximately 15 MPH or less on the average. Most, if not all of this, is calculated after the snow stops falling.

We have spread in excess of 150 tons of salt on the roads this winter.

The actual cutting edge on the snow plow blade starts as a ½” thick by 6” wide piece of steel. The photo shows a new edge which is ready to be installed next to an edge after 25 hours of plowing. It remains about ½” thick but is only around 2” wide.

The speed limit in the Village is 25 MPH. Please let us know if you see any Association vehicles, INCLUDING the manager’s, exceeding this speed.

If I did my math correctly, it takes 3.6 minutes to drive 1.5 miles at 25 MPH. It takes 2.5 minutes to drive 1.5 miles at 35 MPH-a difference of a mere 1 minute and 6 seconds. Only about 9 miles of Village roads are in excess of 1.5 miles from the gatehouse exit.

Email

Recently there had been some concern voiced by members that they were not receiving email updates from the property owner’s association. The association believes it has corrected the problem therefore insuring that each resident receives correspondence per email. If you are currently not receiving board agendas, minutes etc. from the association, please contact the gatehouse so they can attempt to correct the situation.

Spring Chipping to Start Soon

The Kringle Kruncher will be back in action soon! Members need to watch the marquee and website for details of when the spring chipping programs will begin.

The chipping program rules can be found on the CLV website. Below are a few of the highlights of the program:

• The chipper will generally make only one pass through the village.
• There is no charge for chipper services for the first 15 minutes at each residence. Each additional 15 minutes will be charged $25.
• Please stack branches and limbs with the wide ends toward the road. Leaving branches longer is easier than cutting them into smaller pieces.
• Branch stacks should not be higher than four feet.
• Stack branches within four feet of the road’s edge.
• The Spring Chipping is intended for yard maintenance and storm damage only. CLV is not responsible for lot clearing, contractor refuse, or discarded landscaping materials.
• Road clearing takes priority over yard chipping.
Visit the CLV website for all the rules regarding the chipping program.
