CLV Offers Free Concerts For Families

Dust off your picnic baskets, drag out the lawn chairs and come over to Holly Park for the start of the 2008 summer concert series.

Christmas Lake Village’s concert series will kick off June 26 with Bob Ahlemeier’s Magic With Style.  For the past two years Bob has entertained CLV residents with his varied illusions and dry wit.  Keep a close eye on Bob; you never know what’s up his sleeves!

At the June concert there will also be information available regarding neighborhood watch.  Come and learn more about this valuable tool that CLV could incorporate to increase your safety and security.

On July 24, Casey Williams will be bringing out oldies, folk and blues on his acoustic guitar.  Casey has played at the Legion and other local venues and says he loves to play and have fun.

For a change of venue on August 28, Free Style will be performing at the CLV Recreation Center.  People can throw a blanket on the beach or the hill, or set up chairs in the lower parking lot or on the recreation center deck.  The beach will be open for evening swimming.  The recreation center has restrooms, children’s play area, sand beach and plenty of parking.

The concert series is a FREE, Family event with a little something for everyone.  Take advantage of this CLV amenity and come listen to some of Southern Indiana’s talented local musicians.  Holly Park has restrooms, children’s play area, basketball courts, a large flat area for lawn chairs and blankets and plenty of parking.

Each concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month.  As in the past Christmas Lake Garden Club will be on hand with sodas and snacks for sale.  In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Recreation Center.

Spencer County Celebrates Abe Lincoln

Everyone will have lots of opportunities to brush up on their Abraham Lincoln history over the next year.  Many Lincoln activities will occur in Lincoln State Park, Lincoln National Park and Lincoln Boyhood Home, which are all within five miles of CLV.

“There will be lots of opportunities for people to get involved,” commented Melissa Miller, executive director of the Spencer County Visitor’s Bureau.

“We have had phone calls and emails from all over,” Miller said.  “This is a chance in the spotlight for Spencer County as a significant place in Lincoln’s life.”

The Spencer County Visitor’s Bureau has printed brochures of upcoming Lincoln events throughout the summer.  Information can also be found on their website at www.legendaryplaces.org.

A Message From Property Manager Mark Kroeger

DID YOU KNOW…

. . .space limitations restrict the information we can place on the marquee inside the front gate?  Typically the information on the marquee is also on the CLV website in more detail.  If you do not have web access, please contact the office for the details.

…use of the left side entry gate is designated for yellow ’08 auto stickers?   If you enter the left gate with something other than the yellow ’08, you can expect to be delayed.

…that calling the gatehouse (544-9108) and advising the gate officer that you are expecting a guest or service provider, will get them in a lot faster than if we have to call you?

…on the average 1500 vehicles access the Village through the front gate daily?  Over 800 of those are between 3:00PM and 11:00 PM.  With that many vehicles, please don’t be upset if the gate officer does not recognize you.

…that virtually anything that is to be constructed in the Village needs to approved prior to construction?

…we get more complaints about loose and barking dogs than just about everything else?

…”visiting” boats are not allowed on Village lakes?

…children under age 13 are not to be left at the CLV beach with out responsible supervision?

…4-wheelers and dirt bikes are prohibited on all common property?

CLV Holly Park Improvements and Beach Hours

Take the kids for a spin on the new Merry-Go-Round at Holly Park.  If you are “too big” for Merry-Go-Rounds bring out your soccer ball and some friends and utilize the new soccer goals in the park.

The CLV Property Owner’s Association has added the soccer goals and the Merry-Go-Round as 2008 improvements.  Also work on a walking path will commence soon with the path being completed this summer.

If you haven’t been to Holly Park lately take the opportunity to attend the concert June 26 and see Bob Ahlemeier’s Magic with Style show and take in the new look of the park.

Also new for this year will be CLV Beach hours and times.  The Beach will be open seven days a week with lifeguards from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.  When lifeguards are not present you may swim at your own risk.  Please take note that children under 13 years of age are not allowed at the beach without adult supervision

Christmas Lake Garden Club

Ever thought about a water garden or targeting your garden for specific birds or butterflies to visit?  Do you struggle with all things green and could use some expert advice?

The Christmas Lake Garden Club would be the perfect place for you to get answers to all your gardening questions and have a good time as well.  June would also be a great time to get started as June 3 through 9 is National Gardening Week.

In June the Garden Club will meet at Sue Fuhrman’s house.  Aaron Peters from Jenkins Greenhouse will present a program on container gardening.

Tim Griffith from Wild Birds Unlimited will present the July program about landscaping for hummingbirds and butterflies.

In August the club will meet at the Lincoln Heritage Public Library for lunch and then travel to Gentryville to visit the Ayers Garden.  A program will be presented about plants for water gardens.

Coming up in September the club will hold its annual mum sale.  Please support them as they raise money to help them maintain both the Memorial Garden and the September 11 Garden.  Both gardens are seen as you drive into CLV.

On September 27 the club will be dedicating the garden they planted and maintain at the Lincoln cabin at Buffalo Run.  There will be more information available closer to the date.

Santa Claus Museum Seeks Local’s Histories

Calling all those who have stories to tell about growing up in Spencer County!  The Santa Claus Museum invites you to share them as part of The Santa Claus Project: Memories of a Magical Town this spring.

This oral history project will be conducted by Museum Director Crystal Buehler, who will interview Santa Claus, IN. natives and others with special memories of their visits to this holiday-themed town.

“This project will help visitors experience first hand what it was like growing up in this community and how it has grown and changed through the years,” said Buehler.

Recording personal recollections of the town of Santa Claus also will help the Museum more accurately preserve local history. The stories collected will be used to enhance future museum exhibits. The Santa Claus Project will continue to record people’s memories throughout the next two years.

Those interested in volunteering to be interviewed for the project should contact Crystal Buehler at the Santa Claus Museum at (812)937-2687 or visit www.SantaClausMuseum.org.

The Santa Claus Museum features artifacts and photographs from Museum Founder Pat Koch’s private collection as well as loaned and donated treasures from others with ties to the community. In 2007, the Museum served over 8,300 visitors and Buehler expects the Museum to reach over 10,000 visitors this year.

The Santa Claus Museum is a 501-c-3 non-profit organization. Summer hours are 9am to 6pm Monday through Saturday, and 12pm to 5pm on Sunday.  Donations to assist with The Santa Claus Project and other museum activities may be mailed to P.O. Box 1, Santa Claus, IN  47579

Holiday World Grows with $6 million addition

If your kids act like monkeys, Holiday World has the perfect place for them.

Kima Bay in Splashin’ Safari is a new monkey themed water attraction for 2008.  With over seven water slides, more than 100 water-play elements and a huge bucket continuously dumping water on guests, there will be lots of ways to have fun.

“Kima is the Swahili word for monkey,” said Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari president Will Koch.  “We know children will enjoy the silly monkey theming nearly as much as the climbing, splashing and sliding in store for them at Kima Bay.”

Also new for 2008 is the Star Spangled Carousel in the 4th of July section, replacing the bumper boats.  “Our guests have implored us to add a carousel for years,” says Koch.  “We think this beautiful ride will make a lot of families very happy.”

In the Christmas section taking the place of the climbing area/ball pit is the new Reindeer Games ride which is a smaller version the Liberty Launch.  This ride is three stories tall and gives children a bouncy feeling as it takes them to the top and bounces them down.

Some additions have been made to the menu this year as well.  The park has added several pre-packaged food items that do not contain eight of the most common food allergy triggers.

“The past several seasons we’ve heard from more and more parents who had concerns about what their children with food allergies could eat at our park,” said Koch. “Our new food service director took on this initiative with gusto and we’re looking forward to helping our guests learn about these new menu items.”

For healthier options, applesauce, carrots and corn chips will be offered as a substitute for French fries.  In addition, all restaurants will also carry disposable placemats as well as sanitary wipes.

Holiday World has new hours for 2008 as well with the park opening at 9:30 a.m.  For more information visit Holiday World’s website at www.holidayworld.com

LHPL Summer Reading: “Thinkin’ ‘bout Lincoln”

Have you been “Thinkin’ ‘bout Lincoln” lately?  With everyone gearing up for the big Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration it’s hard not to have not to be thinking about the 16th president.  Summer reading at Lincoln Heritage Public Library will be all about Lincoln and how times were when he was alive.

Children’s Librarian Rebecca Rau is excited about all the events lined up for kids and adults alike at the library.  Summer reading registration will run June 2 through 7 and programs and activities will run throughout June and July.

Summer reading is open to one year olds through high schoolers.  Children will be divided into four different groups starting with the one to three year-olds in the “Blab Schoolers.”  Ages three through Second Grade will be in the “Lincoln Loggers.”  Third grade through fifth grade will be in the “River Rafters.”  Sixth grade through high school will be labeled the “Rail Splitters.”

During summer reading many speakers and storytellers will delight young and old alike with stories revolving around Lincoln’s life and times.  A few of the highlights are Lincoln Impersonator Dean Dorrell, Kathleen Crews discussing pioneer toys, and Amazon Jungle John with “Lincoln’s Backyard Animals” just to name a few.

There will also be crafts, movies, and a chance to win a prize for the best built Lincoln Log cabin.  Mrs. Rau has collected many cool prizes such as Holiday World passes, a canoe trip on the Blue River, Marengo Cave tickets, and tickets to the Frazier Museum in Louisville.

Children who love to build will have the opportunity to build a Lincoln Log cabin and display at the library.  There will be three building times throughout summer reading and you can also build at your home and bring your creation in by June 28.  All cabins will be judged June 30.

To conclude the Scholastic Book Fair will be held July 11, 12 and 14.  All participating children will have the opportunity to earn “Lincoln Loot” throughout and spend this money on new books at the fair.

For more information and a full schedule of events, please contact Lincoln Heritage Public Library at 937-7170.

Smith Homes Builds High End Homes Behind Dam

Smith Homes will soon start construction on high end homes on lots right behind the dam of Christmas Lake.  These homes will be geo-thermal, energy efficient homes between 1400 and 2100 square feet.

“Four of the lots will have outstanding views of the lake and two of the lots will have great views of the golf course,” Ron Smith, owner of Smith Homes, said.  “We are building these as green as we can.  They are going to be something different.”

The homes will be landscaped and come with high-end mailboxes.  Currently the land they will be built on does not belong to Christmas Lake Village.  Therefore Smith can promote the new homes with signage that would be otherwise against covenants in CLV.

“When I get done building the homes, they will become a part of the village,” Smith stated.  “Those people (who buy the homes) will pay regular assessments.”

The houses will contain many high end features such as granite counter tops, Hardie siding, fiberglass doors, and metal roofs.

Message From Board Director: Steve Lee

Hello fellow Christmas Lake Village owners.  The time has come for my tenure on the Homeowners Association Board to end.  As such, I wanted to take the time to reflect on my 20 month interim term and share my thoughts.

My family and I moved here, 3 years ago from central Tennessee.  We chose to locate our residence in Santa Claus primarily because of Christmas Lake Village and the beauty that we enjoy here.  So after a bit more than a year, I decided to serve on the board to help ensure the continued peace and enjoyment that we all have.

During this time, many challenges have faced the Village and many remain ahead.  During my term, we faced issues including road conditions, financial challenges, etc.  During these tense times it was very common place for me to hear how “the Board” had done the wrong thing a decade ago and “The Board” did not have a clue.

What I want to relay is the fact that “The Board” is not some mythically empowered body but instead your neighbors that have a willingness to donate their time to attempt to guide the association in a manner that will ensure it for perpetuity.  I would hope that if you get one thing from this message, it is, that you can and should serve on the board.  Most times when openings occur we have very few that express a willingness to serve.

The fellow residents that are/have been members of the board while I have had the privilege to serve, spend a lot of their time outside of board meetings trying to do the “right thing”.  Many will read this and continue to attack the board, and to them I suggest we turn a deaf ear, and realize that there are complainers everywhere.  Others will read this and, I hope, begin to be involved, by attending a meeting at least once per year.

Finally I hope others will choose to get involved with committees and serve on the board itself, being the doers that will continue to make Christmas Lake Village the great place it is today.

                                                                                    Respectfully, you’re Neighbor
                                                                                    Steven W. Lee
